Match Preview | West Bromwich Albion vs. Cardiff City
Cardiff City travel to The Hawthorns to take on West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday, February 13th, 8pm KO.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | IN THE DUGOUT
West Bromwich Albion’s manager is Carlos Corberán, who has been in the position since October 2022.
Hailing from Spain, his first senior managerial experience was with Cypriot side Doxa, prior to being named manager of Leeds United’s U23 side.
During his time with the Whites, Corberán was promoted to the first team under Marcelo Bielsa, whilst continuing his role with the U23s.
He contributed to the club’s promotion to the Premier League under Bielsa, earning top spot in the second tier.
Moving to Huddersfield Town in 2020, Corberán led the club to the Championship Play-Off Final in 2022, but fell to a narrow defeat to Nottingham Forest.
After spending time in Greece with Olympiacos, he moved to West Bromwich Albion for his second spell as a manager in the Championship.
Since being appointed, Corberán has won 32 of his 66 games in charge, a win percentage of 48.48%.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | SEASON SO FAR
The Baggies are currently fifth in the table, having recorded 14 wins in 30 matches so far this season.
In their last six matches, the side have recorded 10 points, leaving them eighth in the form table.
Last time out, Corberán’s side faced a difficult task of taking on Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Albion were leading 2-1 heading into the added-time, but were denied all three points thanks to a late equaliser from Omari Hutchinson.
In terms of their home record, the Baggies have claimed 33 points at The Hawthorns so far this season, a record that ranks fifth in the division.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | JANUARY BUSINESS
Last month saw the addition of three fresh faces to the Baggies squad, while three players also departed.
The side’s attacking options have been bolstered by three loan acquisitions, with Andreas Weimann joining from Bristol City, providing Championship experience.
In addition, winger Mikey Johnston arrived from Celtic, while West Ham United striker Callum Marshall also signed on loan.
As for departures, Jeremy Sarmiento’s loan from Brighton and Hove Albion was cut short, as he moved to Ipswich Town on loan, while Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s move to Bristol City was made permanent.
Defender Caleb Taylor has departed to gain further experience, joining Bolton Wanderers on loan until the end of the campaign.
CITY FLASHBACK | WHITTS’ WINNER IN PREMIER LEAGUE CLASH
The Bluebirds and the Baggies met in December 2013 in an important clash in the Premier League.
In a tense affair with little to separate both sides, the contest was settled by Peter Whittingham, who had netted in each of his previous two league appearances against West Brom.
The City playmaker was renowned for his magical left foot, but the winning goal came from a rare header, as the Bluebirds claimed a significant victory.
Late on, the Baggies looked to draw level, but were denied by goalkeeper David Marshall, who had a stellar campaign for City.
